What to Pack for a Riding Holiday: The Ultimate Checklist

Planning a riding holiday? From riding boots and helmets to gloves, waterproofs and other essentials, our ultimate packing checklist will help you arrive fully prepared. Discover what experienced riders never leave home without and make your next horse riding adventure as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Whether it's your first riding holiday or your tenth, packing for several days in the saddle is a little different from packing for an ordinary trip.

When you're riding for four, five or even six hours a day, the little things suddenly become very important. Comfortable boots, the right gloves and clothing that works with the weather can be the difference between spending your evenings reliving the day's adventures—or nursing sore feet and aching hands.

To help you make the most of your holiday, we've put together our ultimate riding holiday packing checklist.

1. A Riding Hat You Trust

Your riding hat is the most important piece of equipment you'll pack.

Before you travel, check that:

  • It still meets current safety standards.
  • It fits correctly.
  • It hasn't suffered a significant knock or fall.
  • It's comfortable enough to wear for several hours each day.

If your helmet is more than a few years old or no longer fits properly, a riding holiday is the perfect excuse to replace it before you set off.

2. Comfortable Riding Boots

You'll probably spend more time in your riding boots on holiday than you do during a normal week at home.

Not only will you be riding every day, but you'll also be walking around the yard, helping to tack up, exploring local villages or relaxing after your ride.

Choose boots that:

  • Are comfortable from the first wear.
  • Offer good grip.
  • Are suitable for both riding and walking.
  • Can cope with wet weather if needed.

Many riders prefer waterproof country boots that are equally at home in the saddle and on the ground, and wear them with comfortable half chaps while they're in the saddle.

3. Riding Gloves

It's amazing how quickly multiple days of riding can take their toll on your hands.

Good riding gloves improve your grip on the reins, help prevent blisters and stay comfortable even during long hours in the saddle.

They're one of those items you barely notice—until you forget to pack them.

4. Comfortable Riding Clothes

You don't need to overpack.

A few pairs of comfortable riding tights or breeches, moisture-wicking tops and lightweight layers are usually all you need.

Think comfort rather than fashion. After several days of riding, you'll appreciate clothing that moves with you and dries quickly.

5. Layers for Changing Weather

Even in the middle of summer, the weather can change quickly.

Pack:

It's always easier to remove a layer than wish you'd brought one.

6. Riding Socks

It might seem like a small detail, but quality riding socks can make a huge difference over the course of a week.

They help reduce rubbing inside your boots, improve comfort and can keep your feet feeling fresher after long days in the saddle.

If you're riding every day, pack enough pairs so you always have a clean set ready to go.

7. Sun Protection

Most riding holidays involve spending hours outdoors.

Don't forget:

These simple items often become the most-used things in your bag.

8. Waterproofs

Even if the forecast looks perfect, it's worth bringing waterproof clothing.

A lightweight waterproof jacket packs down easily and can save the day if the weather changes unexpectedly.

Some trails ride in all but the most extreme conditions, so it's always best to be prepared.

9. A Few Extras You'll Be Glad You Packed

There are always a few items riders wish they'd remembered.

Our favourites include:

  • A double waistbag to keep your phone and small personal items close
  • Riding underwear (trust us on this one, they're our riding holiday essentials!)
  • Phone power bank
  • Small first aid kit
  • Electrolyte tablets
  • Insect repellent
  • Chafing balm

None of them take up much room, but you'll be pleased to have them when you need them.

Before You Leave…

Take a few minutes to check all of your equipment before you travel.

Does your riding hat still fit properly?

Are your boots comfortable?

Do your gloves need replacing?

Are your waterproofs still waterproof?

A riding holiday is something many of us look forward to for months, so it's worth making sure your equipment is ready too.
