Mud fever, also known as pastern dermatitis, is a common bacterial skin infection affecting horses, primarily in wet and muddy conditions.
We have come up with some of our best tips & tricks to help you and your horses through the wet seasons!

Environment Management: Ensure Clean, dry and well drained paddock areas. We love the mud control matts and there is a lot of affordable options out there now !
Regular Grooming: Paying special attention to the pasterns and lower limbs, keep Clean & Dry, we reccomend always using a clean towel to towel dry, dryness is the key to keep the bacteria from thriving
Barrier Creams: Waterproof barrier creams will help the wet mud not stick to their legs. Try to where possible to prevent prolonged skin wetness.
Protective Legwear: Similar to barrier creams this will help the mud to stay off
Early Detection: Any signs of scabs or swelling the longer left the harder it will be to manage and we all try to keep those vet call out vets as low as possible!

Effective management of mud fever involves maintaining a dry environment, practicing diligent leg care, and addressing symptoms promptly to prevent complications. With proper care, the impact of mud fever can be significantly minimised, ensuring the health and comfort of your horse.
